Broughty Athletic v Dundee East Craigie
East of Scotland cup (1st round)
Ground: Whitton Park, Dundee
For my third game I went back to junior football again. In the first round of the East of Scotland cup, Broughty Athletic of the East Superleague played at home against Dundee East Craigie, who play 2 divisions lower. Broughty Athletic are from Broughty Ferry, in the east of Dundee, so this was another short journey for me, just a short hop on the bus.
Broughty Athletic got founded in 1920 as Broughty Ex-Servicemen, in 1951 they were renamed to Broughty Athletic. Around the same time they also moved to their current ground, Whitton Park. In 2006 they joined the newly formed East Region, North Division. Promotions in 2010 and 2015 took them to the East Superleague.
The ground itself was quite simple. No stands, just a few benches. It was again a friendly atmosphere with cheap drinks and entry, like what can be expected from junior football. During the game it wasn’t obvious who the higher division team were. East Craigie surprisingly took the lead. Once Broughty Athletic equalised, I expected them to continue to win the game. I couldn’t be more wrong, East Craigie scored again and as Broughty Athletic were pushing for the equaliser, they scored the 1-3 and finally decided the match with a surprising 1-4 win.
